YSU shoots for #1 in RecycleMania
Youngstown State University is taking on more than 400 colleges and universities, including Harvard, Yale, Duke and Boston College, in the national 2010 RecycleMania competition through March 27.

The competition for college and university recycling programs promotes waste reduction activities on campus. Over a 10–week period, schools report recycling and trash data, which are then ranked according to who collects the most recyclables.

"We hope to be number 1 in the state and the nation," said Dan Kuzma, YSU Recycling director.

YSU Recycling is encouraging all faculty, staff and students to use recycling bins throughout campus and the university's recycling center on Adams Street in Smoky Hollow to recycle paper and publications, plastic containers, metal food and beverage cans, glass beverage bottles and cardboard. For more information, contact the YSU Recycling program at 330–941–2294.

During the competition, YSU Recycling will present a small reusable, edible, or spendable gift to individuals on campus who are seen recycling. Gifts are donated by Arby's, Campus Recreation & Student Programming, Comdoc Copy Center, the Green Team and YSU Dining Services/Sodexo.

To celebrate the closing of the competition, YSU Recycling will host the first annual Trash Bash on Friday, March 26, 6 to 8 pm at Peaberry's in Kilcawley Center. Students and faculty are encouraged to create an outfit or costume made from reusable and/or recyclable materials. Over the next few weeks, YSU Recycling will have bins set up in key locations around campus to collect miscellaneous items, such as old gift cards, bottle caps, newspaper comic strips and more that will then become available through to assist participants in creating their costumes. Space will be limited.

For more information on how to get involved or what to recycle, contact Kuzma at 330–941–2294 or djkuzma@ysu.edu or visit www.ysu.edu/recycle.
