Private Institution to State University- 1967

Abstract

As Youngstown College evolved into The Youngstown University during the postwar years, its traditional system of private funding began to falter. As the institution grew, sources of income could not keep up. Faculty research and professional development suffered. Laboratory equipment and facilities were becoming fast outmoded. Not surprisingly, the Administration began looking to the State of Ohio—and to the Federal Government—as a source of additional money. The first use of public money by YU was the creation of the College of Health & Human Services through a state bond issue. Soon thereafter came the construction of a new engineering school (now Moser Hall), with funding provided through a Federal grant of $5 million. It was during the 1966 dedication of this new facility that Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes invited The Youngstown University to join the state's system of public-supported college and universities. The Bill to admit YU to the public system of higher education passed unanimously by the Ohio General Assembly and was signed into law by Governor Rhodes on September 1, 1967.
