dc.description.abstract With the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese on December 7, 1941, the United States entered World War II. Youngstown College, like the rest of the country, dedicated itself to supporting the military and would emerge from the conflict completely transformed. Summer vacations were canceled for the duration of the war. Likewise, the football program was suspended and Coach Dwight W. “Dike” Beede turned to selling insurance. The curriculum at Youngstown College was adjusted to military needs. A “Wartime Accelerated Degree Program” was instituted, whereby a four-year diploma could be earned in three years. Courses were highlighted that provided training for students entering the Armed Forces, various war industries, and government service. Flight instruction was offered for students destined for service in the U.S. Army Air Forces and U.S. Naval Aviation. After the war ended in 1945, Youngstown College experienced a period of unprecedented growth, thanks to the huge influx of military veterans entering college through the G.I. Bill. The war time curriculum also led to a greater emphasis on science and engineering which remains today. en_US
