Academic Deans Council Minutes : August 29, 2007

Abstract

Dr. Khawaja welcomed council and said the new academic year was off to an excellent start with an increase in enrollment of almost 2%. There was to be a Constitution Day program on September 17 in the Ohio Room, Kilcawley Center. The theater drama "Murder in the Cathedral" was scheduled to debut October 4. Faculty Art show was set for September 14 at the McDonough Museum of Art. The College of Education's latest edition of the "Showcase" magazine was issued and the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services' "Lifeline" newsletter was mailed. Stephanie Smith, new chair of the Art Department, presented the M.A. in Art Education to council. The Northeast Ohio Commission became much more active and was to be ready to report to the Board of Regents by the end of the year. One of their major topics at the time was consolidating academic programs under certain lead institutions. The Finance area under Gene Grilli sought feedback from the deans on the draft purchasing policy that was sent to the council with the agenda. Dr. Khawaja discussed creating a multidivisional group to assist with the process and transparency of information for negotiations. Marilyn Ward announced the start of the timeframe to begin requests for faculty positions th academic year 2008-2009. Dr. Khawaja consulted with the deans on a last-minute draft of the Academic Division Priorities for FY 2008 to be presented to the Board of Trustees. Dr. Khawaja stated that to successfully initiate the launch of the Academic Strategic Plan, YSU needed to develop our leadership plan and move on the plan in a systematic way. In consultation with the Chairs' Development Committee, a new chairs' employment contract period of July 1 through June 30 was created.
