Academic Deans Council Minutes : February 02, 2011

Abstract

YSU's Rookery Radio was to have a grand opening celebration at the Youngstown Business Incubator on February 9. As part of February's African-American history month, "Cities II: The Footprints of Man," a 3-dimensional creation by Hilton Murray, was to be on display in the front window of Bliss Hall. The 3rd Annual STEM College Awards Dinner was set for February 17. Delphi and YSU were partnering on a Third Frontier grant to work on an aluminum battery cable. At noon a presentation was given by Dr. Galia Sabar, Chair of African Studies at Tel Aviv University. The Higher Learning Commission mentors were supposed to be at YSU tomorrow and Friday but was postponed due to the bad weather. Dr. Tod Porter, Coordinator of General Education, came to the Deans Council to share what he was to present to the Academic Senate about the policy for assessment of written communication. Jackie LeViseur, Interim Director of Alumni and Events Management, came to Deans Council to discuss the possibility of combining spring undergraduate and graduate ceremonies. It was decided to hold separate ceremonies. Marilyn Ward passed out current general fund budget status reports to the Deans for review. The latest report on enrollment showed a good head count, but not as good as projected based on fall 2010. Dr. Khawaja believed that there was not proper clarity on awarding Extended Teaching Service. Dr. Sarkissian stated he would propose to the Academic Standards Committee that students who miss the 1st week of classes be administratively dropped. Dean Licata also proposed that a 2.0 GPA be the minimally acceptable GPA. Every advisor received 1 copy and each Dean's Office received 2 copies of the Undergraduate Bulletin. Significant numbers of students have been employed at YSU in the summer but not enrolled. To work summer, they need to take classes.
