Thallium undergoes a martensitic phase transformation from B-phase to L-phase on cooling. It has been attempted in this investigation to determine the enthalpy changes of both phases from 445°K to 525°K, including the enthalpy change associated with the phase transformation and also the crystal structures and lattice parameters of the respective phase at Tc+-10°K. Then it was attempted to determine the effect of dilute additions of antimony to pure thallium on these thermodynamic and x-ray parameters.
The enthalpy changes of the phase transformation, the crystal structures and lattice parameters of the respective phase and the volume change associated with the phase transformation bears a linear relationship with additions of antimony in pure thallium. The result supports the basic premise of Ahmed's theory on electronic contribution to phase transformation. |
