Working–Class Studies introduces new website

Modern Steelmaking" series produced for Sharon Steel Corp. in 1968, is
among the items on the new Center for Working–Class Studies website.
Youngstown State University’s Center for Working–Class Studies is unveiling a new website that
provides
a variety of resources for secondary and college teachers who want to
include attention to work and working–class studies in their courses.
The site, available at http://cwcs.ysu.edu,
features a digital library of materials about Mahoning Valley history,
projects created by YSU students and faculty, an online exhibit on work
in the Mahoning Valley, syllabi and classroom materials for K–12 and
college teachers, and links to a variety of resources for those
interested in working–class life and culture. The site also provides a
link to the Working–Class Perspectives blog, which offers weekly
commentaries on working–class issues locally and nationally.
“We’re really excited to have this new site up and
running,” said Sherry Linkon, co–director of the CWCS. “By highlighting
the creative and critical work being done in working–class studies here
at YSU, this website will help us fulfill our mission of increasing
awareness and understanding of the working class.”
The site was designed by Tyler Clark with graphic
design by Stephen Andrew, and it features photographs by Steve Cagan as
well as a variety of historical and artistic images from the Mahoning
Valley. The CWCS continues to develop new material for the website,
including a section about the ethnic and racial communities of the
Mahoning Valley, due to be completed later this year.
The Center for Working–Class Studies at YSU was
the first academic program in the United States to focus on
interdisciplinary approaches to research, teaching, and activism
related to working–class life. The CWCS has played a crucial leadership
role in creating a new academic field, and it has gained international
recognition for its innovative approaches. The CWCS is funded by YSU,
the CWCS Consortium and the Ford Foundation.
