YSU’s yo* magazine wins national press prize The magazine placed first in the feature/special audience college magazine category. “The special audience award is a great fit for the yo* magazine, whose readers and producers know what it’s like to live in a place whose rough edges and insides call out to be heard,” said Cristina Cala, a 2008 YSU graduate who served as editor of the yo* for 2007 and 2008. “Youngstown just has good stories to tell, and we wanted to tell them.” Indiana University’s Inside received second place and Distraction,
published by the University of Miami, won third place. Newspapers from
large and small colleges and universities across the country entered
the competition. The award–winning Spring 2008 issue featured work by Chelsea Pflugh, Britta Snowberger, Richard Boccia, Brian Cetina, Sarah Sole, Ashley Tate, Cheryl Thompson, Emmalee Torisk, Tony Lucente and Cala. ![]() ![]() Earnheardt was at the Kansas City convention with 12 YSU students when the award was announced. The trip was sponsored by the YSU Provost’s Office, the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, the English Department, The Jambar and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. The yo*, published each semester, focuses on life in the Mahoning Valley and targets the under 30–year–old audience. The most recent issue of the yo* featured stories about the Foster Theater and abandoned areas in the Mahoning Valley. Sarah Sole, editor of The Jambar, and Richard Boccia, managing editor of The Jambar, are this year’s editors. The *yo started in 2007 after students asked journalism faculty to help them obtain more experience writing and publishing magazine–style stories. Tim Francisco, a journalism faculty member, worked closely with the *yo and taught the university’s first journalism magazine writing course in fall 2007. The Jambar plans to publish another edition of the *yo on Nov. 18. Alyssa Lenhoff, director of journalism, said she and other journalism faculty are now trying to find permanent funding for printing of the *yo and are working with university officials to guarantee its long–term existence. Previous issues have been published with funds provided by the YSU Student Government Association. “We know that the *yo serves a valuable purpose for our students and for its readers,” Lenhoff said. “We are gratified that outside, independent experts see that some of our students are capable of producing top–notch work.” YSU Centennial Celebration concert set for Nov. 24 The program is entitled “2009 Band–O–Rama: YSU Centennial Celebration!” The evening features performances by the Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Christopher Heidenreich, and the YSU Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Stephen L.
