Telecomm students broadcast NCAA championships

Camera operator Candi Thomas was part of a four—student team of YSU telecommunications studies majors that produced live video streaming of the 2010 NCAA Div. II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Canton.
Four Youngstown State University telecommunications studies students produced live video streaming of the 2010 NCAA Div. II Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the C. T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, Ohio.

The video was streamed via the NCAA/CBS television servers, and was recorded for later highlight videos to be offered via the NCAA site.

"Any time our students tell the story of an event like this to the rest of the world, they are also telling the world about our Telecommunication Studies program and about YSU," said Bill Brophy, instructor. "There is no better way for them to truly hone  skills than to apply classroom lessons independently in a real world situation."

Students who worked on the broadcast are John Raidel of Girard, producer/director; Kevin Davis of Warren, camera operator/graphic coordinator; Ben Lane of Hubbard, camera operator/technician; and Candi Thomas of Warren, camera operator/technician.

The crew provided more than 40 hours of live television of the event over the four–day event, March 10 to 13.

The sports broadcasting program started in fall 2009 as a joint venture of the YSU Telecommunications Studies program and the YSU sports information department.

Before being tapped to cover the NCAA championships, the crew honed their skills by shooting and producing YSU athletics events, including swimming/diving, women''s volleyball and soccer, as well as providing video and graphics for the Stambaugh Stadium Jumbotron during the football season.

"We did volleyball, girls soccer, swimming and diving in the fall ,and we have been able to produce two girls basketball games, all of which have exceeded everybody''s expectations," Raidel said. "In six months, without a lot of equipment, we have built enough of a reputation to get this opportunity."

In addition to YSU and NCAA athletics events, Raidel and the other crew members produce a regularly scheduled wrestling program for Sports Time Ohio. Several of the crew members also help produce the T–Com Studies live TV program "Homework Express."

President–elect Anderson gives 'Word to Live By' lecture

The series is based on the "last lecture" of Randy Pausch, a professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University. The lecture, given in September 2007 when Pausch was suffering from pancreatic cancer, gained national fame. Pausch died in July 2008.

Anderson's lecture is free and open to the public.

WYSU features 'The Daily Buzz'

Stacia Erdos, anchor of "The Daily Buzz"
WYSU 88.5 FM and The Business Journal have joined forces to bring listeners "The Daily Buzz" weekdays during broadcasts of "All Things Considered."

"The Daily Buzz," a compilation of local, state and national business news, can be heard weekdays during the 6 p.m. hour on WYSU, Youngstown State University's public radio station. The Business Journal also posts a daily newscast of "The Daily Buzz" anchored on its website, www.business–journal.com.

"With excellent local news partners, and still without our own news department, I''m pleased that we continue to build our local news presence on the air," said Gary Sexton, WYSU director. "We established a standard that anything we put on the air locally has to sound like NPR. 'The Daily Buzz' does that."

"We are excited to join with WYSU–FM to bring our daily webcast to the station''s listeners," said Andrea Wood, publisher of The Business Journal. "'The Daily Buzz' is designed to be a fast–paced compilation of the day''s top local, regional and national business news. It results from the trend that our industry calls convergence journalism. In our case, we''re converging The Business Journal''s print and online publications, then adding video to maximize resources. With the addition of WYSU–FM and radio, the circle – and our convergence – is complete."

The anchor of "The Daily Buzz" is Stacia Erdos, former anchor at WYTV in Youngstown.
