Donors give trees as part of Campus Beautification Initiative
Youngstown State University will celebrate Arbor Day and the
recently–launched Campus Beautification Initiative by planting its
first two donor trees on the campus core, 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17.
Members of the campus and community are invited.
The Campus Beautification Initiative
seeks to preserve campus trees and green spaces by establishing an
endowment to help support the on–going care and maintenance of campus
grounds. To generate funds for the endowment, donors can sponsor
memorial trees, benches and bricks for the campus.
Donors Ted and Kathy Szmaj and Tom and
Kate Shipka are the first donors to sponsor a tree. They have been
invited to throw the final shovel of soil in planting their trees on
Nov. 17.

The grounds department hauls one of the two new trees to be planted as part of the Campus Beautification Initiative.
Ted, his spouse Kathy, and Ted's siblings, Elizabeth, John and Greg, are all alumni of YSU. They are planting a silver linden (
Tilia tomentosa) adjacent to the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in memory of Ted's
father,
Casimir Szmaj, a 1961 engineering graduate of Youngstown University.
Ted noted that his father, who emigrated
from Poland, made sure that all of his children received a college
education. "My siblings and I liked the idea of a living, breathing
tribute to our father on the campus of YSU, where all of us, including
Dad, received our degrees," he said.
Silver Linden trees are characterized by
a smooth, gray bark, leaves that are dark green on top and shimmering
silver underneath, and fragrant clusters of yellow–white flowers in
early summer. They grow to a height of 50 to 70 feet and make excellent
shade trees.
Tom and Kate Shipka are planting a striped maple (Acer pensylvanicum)
in front of DeBartolo Hall, home of the College of Liberal Arts and
Social Sciences. Tom is professor and chair emeritus of Philosophy and
Religious Studies. His teaching career at YSU spanned 37 years from
1969 to 2006. Kate, son Andrew and daughter Anne Louise White are also
YSU graduates.
"We
encourage all YSU active and retired faculty and staff, alumni, and all
others whose lives have been touched by YSU, to support the campus
beautification initiative," said Tom, who received the YSU Heritage
Award. "It is a 'thank you' which will endure for generations." The Shipkas are dedicating their tree to "YSU faculty and staff – past, present, and future."
The striped maple, sometimes known as
Moosewood, is distinguished by its unique striped bark, a broad, soft
leaf that resembles a goose foot, and colorful fall foliage. When
young, the bark is striped in green and white, turning to brown as it
matures. The trees grow to a maximum height of 45 feet and, in the
wild, are an important food source for wildlife. This is the first Acer pensylvanicum on the YSU campus.
The Campus Beautification Working Group, made up
of YSU faculty, staff, students and community members, advises donors
regarding tree selection and placement. Selected trees must be able to
thrive in the northeast Ohio climate zone, be of educational value to
YSU students, and must help diversify the campus flora. The Working
Group is also helping to finalize a Campus Landscape Master Plan and
applying for certification as a Tree Campus USA, a program affiliated with the Arbor Day Foundation that recognizes campus environmental stewardship.
For more information on the Campus Beautification Initiative, or to make a donation, visit http://www.ysu.edu/treesbenches/ or contact University Development at 330–941–3119.
Student designs cover for collection of poems

Cover designed by YSU student Michael Rees.
Michael Ress, a senior art major at Youngstown State University,
conceived and executed the cover and interior design of a new
collection of poems published by Etruscan Press.
Ress completed the work while working as an intern with Etruscan and the YSU Poetry Center.
"Michael's design is one of the
most beautiful and elegant we've had in nine years working with many
professional designers," said Philip Brady, Etruscan executive director
and director of the Poetry Center.
The design is for the book Peal by Bruce Bond. Peal
is Bond's seventh full–length collection of poems. He has won numerous
national awards, including fellowships from the National Endowment for
the Arts and the Broad Loaf Writer's Conference.
Ress' internship was funded by the
Wean Foundation and the Northeast Ohio Master's of Fine Arts program.
He is designing Etruscan's next forthcoming release, Incident Light by H.L.Hix.
Founded in 2001, Etruscan Press is
an independent literary non–profit, sponsored by YSU and the NEOMFA in
partnership with Wilkes University.
