dc.description.abstract The purpose of this thesis was to derive the equations for optimum design of slender beam-columns by analytical methods. Design charts for simply supported steel beam columns have been constructed from the equations that were derived. Techniques which lead to fully stressed solutions were employed. The algebraic techniques which are tedious and difficult to handle are presented along with design charts and optimum design equations. From these equations and design charts, it is relatively easy to design a specific form of beam-column to optimum state without using trial and error techniques. en_US
