Youngstown, as defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is a food desert which makes it hard for Youngstown residences to access affordable and healthy foods. With upwards of $22 million donated to the Kilcawley: Centered on the Future Campaign, renovations for the student center are on track to begin May 5. Local organizations are advocating for food access with ideas such as farmers markets, co-ops, and mobile markets. Students respond to Kilcawley's renovation. "Academic Bites," a podcast of YSU professor Kyle Starkey, is featured. The Co-Op Internship program is discussed. YSU's chapter of the American Foundry Society competed in the national Cast In Steel Competition in Atlanta and won several awards. The Atlantic 10, a mid-major collegiate conference that competes at the NCAA's Division I level, is featured. The Missouri Valley Football Conference named five YSU football alumni to the 40th Anniversary Football Team. Senior Jacob Potts, music composition major and percussionist, won the third annual Dr. Stephen L. Gage Memorial Composition Contest. Penguin Productions' 11th annual Federal Frenzy Music and Arts Festival will take place April 25-26. Jambar graduating seniors say their farewells. Ultra Q, one of the bands preforming at the Federal Frenzy, is reviewed. YSU's men's tennis team hosted its senior night at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center on April 19, and lost 5-2 to Cleveland State University. The women's tennis teamed won 6-1 against Oakland University at the YSU Indoor Tennis Center. Change is on the way for the NCAA reincorporated name, image and likeness deals as everyone waits for the final hearing in the House v. NCAA case. The YSU women's lacrosse team steamrolled the University of Detroit Mercy 20-9. |
