dc.description.abstract This photograph depicts Dr. Joseph Newcome preparing polio immunization kits as part of the mass immunization efforts in Youngstown in 1962. Newcome is seen here putting three drops of vaccine into cups of distilled water. The program, which was sponsored by the Mahoning County Medical Society and endorsed by the American Medical Association, was reportedly the first in the nation. This phase of the project occurred February 15-17, 1962. en_US
