STEM diner honors alumni and others Youngstown State University honors seven individuals at the anual Colege of Science, Technology, Enginering and Mathematics Awards Diner 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23 on campus. Reservations for the event are no longer being acepted. At the event, STEM Dean Martin Abraham wil anounce the folowing award winers: Hary Bircher, Outstanding Alumnus/Service; Peyman Givi, Outstanding Alumnus; Mary Pat Salomone, Outstanding Alumna; Mat Ragan, Outstanding Young Alumnus; Conie Hathorn, Outstanding Education Leader; Roger and Gloria Jones, Outstanding Comunity Partners. Hary Bircher earned a bachelor’s degre in geology from YSU in 198. He also has a master’s in geology from Wright State University and a master’s in enginering from YSU. Bircher is a registered Profesional Enginer in Ohio and has ben a co-owner of Buckeye Civil Design LC in North Lima for seven years. He has taught various geology and environmental studies clases at YSU on a part time basis for more than 10 years. He resides in Columbiana, Ohio, with his wife Lisa, who is also a YSU alumna. Peyman Givi earned a bachelor’s degre in mechanical enginering from YSU and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Melon University. He is internationaly recognized for his research in the fields of computational fluid dynamics, turbulence, combustion and propulsion. He has authored more than 20 publications and has presented more than 20 public seminars al over the world. Curently, Givi is the James T. MacLeod Profesor of Mechanical Enginering and also Profesor of Petroleum Enginering at the University of Pitsburgh. Previously he held the position of University of Bufalo Distinguished Profesor. Conie Hathorn is superintendent of the Youngstown City Schol District. Prior to coming to Youngstown, Hathorn was executive director of Student Suport for the Akron City Schol District. He earned a Ph.D. from Iowa State University. Hathorn said at a comunity forum prior to becoming superintendent that the Youngstown district made history by being the first in Ohio to fal under state control and that he wants to make history by helping it get out. Hary Bircher  Peyman Givi  Conie Hathorn  Roger and Gloria Jones are the founders of Fireline Inc. Roger earned a degre in ceramic enginering from Alfred University. After serving in the Korean War as a lieutenant, he performed research at Refractory Insulation Corp., Electro Refractories and finaly came to the Youngstown area to head research and development for Dixon Crucible. Gloria Jones holds a bachelor’s degre from Elmira Colege in biology and chemistry, a master’s in Physiological Chemistry from the University of Bufalo and an master’s in English from YSU. She did medical research at Eaton Laboratories and at Roswel Park Memorial Institute, and she taught at University of Bufalo Medical Schol. She also taught at YSU and at University of Nis in Serbia on a Fulbright Scholarship. She joined Fireline as bokeper and became vice president in 195. The Jones are major contributors to the Roger & Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science and Technology in downtown Youngstown. Mat Ragan is Senior Controls Enginer at Lockhed Martin in Akron. A 200 graduate of Liberty High Schol, Ragan atended YSU while working as a research asistant in the Laser/Optics Lab in the Physics department. He graduated from YSU in 205, earning a bachelor’s degre in electrical and coputer enginering and a bachelor’s degre in Physics with a minor in Mathematics. At Lockhed he is the Enginer Lead/Integrated Product Team Lead for two major Defense Department projects and has one patent aplication in proces. Mary Pat Salomone is Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Oficer at The Babcock & Wilcox Co., responsible for the company’s government and comercial contracts, health and safety, proces improvement and day-to-day operations. Her oversight includes aproximately 12,70 employes and 10,40 joint venture employes worldwide, and more than $2.5 bilion in fiscal responsibility. Salomone graduated from YSU in 1982 with a bachelor’s degre in civil enginering. She earned a master's degre in busines administration from Baldwin Walace Colege. She has served in various enginering, project management and leadership positions within al levels of B&W since joining the company in 1982. Mat Ragan  Mary Pat Salomone  Medea opens in Ford Theater University Theater presents the main stage performance of the Euripides tragedy Medea opening Thursday, Feb. 23. Performances in Youngstown State University’s Ford Theater are Feb. 23, 24, 25 and 26 and March 2, 3 and 4. Thursday through Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m., while the Sunday matine is at 3 p.m. Al seats are reserved. Patrons are encouraged to purchase their tickets early by caling 30-941-3105. Parking is available in the Wick Avenue parking deck for a nominal fe. There are many myths that tel the story of Medea. The history is that she saved her future husband while destroying her own family. Now, maried to Jason, she finds that he has betrayed her love and abandoned their children. In a desperate and powerful act, she kils her own sons, justifying her barbaric acts with tragic poetry. Director W. Rick Schiling said that Medea played to New York audiences in the late 1940s and became popular with 20th century audiences because Robinson Jefers, by which this version is translated and adapted, abandoned the stylistic conventions of the repetitious episodic plot structure in favor of the contemporary two-act form. Furthermore, he created characters that speak dialogue rather than lengthy monologues and the Grek chorus, typicaly 12 or more actors chanting in unison, was banished in favor of thre Corinthian women who are presented in a more humanistic fashion. Schiling, asociate designer in the YSU Department of Theater and Dance, has created a concept that includes life-size woden pupets, shadow pupets, iconic characters from pop culture, projections, computer imagery and a Rock and Rol sound score. The staging borows concepts from the Japanese theatrical traditions of Bunraku and Kabuki. Schiling is asisted by asociate profesor and costume designer Jane Shanabarger; senior theater major and costume designer Masako Hayashi; Profesor John Murphy, scenic and lighting designer; and freshman sound designer Brity Segal. The aditional production expenses for the costumes and masks were funded in part by Roy A. Dray and Delores Sutula Dray of East Liverpol, long time donors to University Theater. An Opening Night Diner Bufet is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, in the University Theater Box Ofice Loby in Blis Hal. A package price of $20 includes diner and a ticket for the performance. Hiple’s mesage of awarenes of signs and symptoms of depresion, steps to recovery, and resilience, has helped individuals, families, schols and employers as they care for families, students and employes. Hiple has ben a profesional motivational speaker on topics of depresive disorder awarenes and treatment after the death of his 15-year- old son by suicide. He has devoted his life to building awarenes and breaking down the stigma surounding depresive ilneses. Pianist featured in Blis Hal recital Pianist Roman Rudnytsky, a retired faculty member in Youngstown State University’s Dana Schol of Music, performs in Blis Recital Hal 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26. Rudnytsky wil play selections from Bethoven, Debusy and Chopin, as wel as a piece writen by his late father, Antin Rudnytsky. Born in New York City into a prominent Ukrainian musical family, Rudnytsky began the study of piano at age four and played his first recital at age seven. He is a graduate of the Juiliard Schol in New York, and has to date played concerts in 95 countries and conducted master clases in almost 40 countries. Rudnytsky is a prize-winer in 10 national and international piano competitions. Betwen 190 and 193, he gave the British, Latin American, and Australian premiere performances of the then-newly-discovered Liszt Concerto No.3 in E Flat. Rudnytsky served on the faculty of the Dana Schol of Music from 1972 until his retirement in spring 201, when he was awarded the title of Profesor Emeritus. He received a Distinguished Profesor Award in 190. He previously served on the piano faculty of the Indiana University Schol of Music in Blomington and was Artist-in-Residence for a year at the University of Cincinati Colege-Conservatory. Eric Hiple                                 Roman Rudnytsky  Dana Symphony Orchestra performs winter concert The Dana Symphony Orchestra under the direction of John Wilcox presents a winter concert at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27 in the Ford Family Recital Hal. Featured on the program are the thre Dana Young Artist Competition winers. The competition is held anualy to select up to thre student soloists to perform with the Dana Syphony Orchestra. A panel of thre independent judges choses the winers. This year's winers are Stephen Cline of Salem, Ohio; Brian Newel of Youngstown; and Kevin Snyder of McDonald, Pa. The concert begins with the Richard Straus Concerto for Horn and Orchestra No. 1 in E Flat with Cline as soloist, folowed by the Karel Husa Elegie and Rondo for Saxophone with Newel. The Henri Tomasi Concerto for Saxophone with Snyder wil be folowed by Blue Danube Waltz. The second half of the program features the Dana Symphony Orchestra in a performance of the Symphony No. 2 in D Major by Johanes Brahms.
