The murals and icons in the church were done by Orthodox artists. Fr. Pappas is the first and so far only priest of the parish. The parish has grown from 135 families in 1955, consisting exclusively of immigrant laborers (ste el mills, industrial painting, etc.), to 450 families today. Eighty percent of the parish are high school graduates and many go on to college. Many are teachers in public schools, 8-10 are doctors and there is only lawyer. They are business- men, contractors, industrial painters, etc. but, the overwhelming population ,is/are still laborers. In the late sixties/early seventies there was a new wave of Gre ek immigrants, ca '50 to 70 young familie s. Most of the men were unskilled and went into the labor pool. But they weF e hard workers and within 10 years they had made something of themselves. Oftentimes, they were better off than American- born Greeks. The families of Archangel Michael are very strong-minded about being Greek and most of all feeling GREEK. Every home serves Greek food and drink. Each home has a religious shrine depicting icons of their patron saint, the Virgin Mary, Jesus, etc. and each shrine houses a vigil light. Even the children participate fully in church life, customs and traditions. Even thou~h the Greek language is suffering, all other aspe cts of life are still GREEK. . ~I The patriarch of Constantinople is a spiritual leader but not a de spot. Each candidate for the prie sthood must decide his marital status be'fore ordination. His decision is irrevocable. Married priests cannot become bishops. Archangel Michael parish has produced 5 young priests. The church service which until about 1970 was entirely in Greek, is now 60% English and 40% Greek. liturgy on Sunday with The priests wear Orthodox vestments. There is one services. The Greek people are very close. The contractors employ 300-400 people in the Mahoning Valley. They are perpetrators of the MOSAIC. They are not trying to be assimilated.
