Minutes College of Arts & Sciences General Education Committee Meeting Sept. 20, 1999 Members present: Carroll, Jiang, Kestner, Isaac, Mir, Ritchey, Womble Ritchey opened the meeting by clarifying some points from the Sept. 13 meeting: - with regards to the prerequisite issue, we should avoid certifllng any course as general education that has a non- gen. ed. course as a prerequisite - Jenkins has asked that we wait on subdividing area requirements into categories The committee then turned to consideration of the course proposals distributed at the last meeting. The following recommendations were made: 375 1 Social Research - recommended for approval, sent forward 3707 Psychology of Intimate Relationships - send back for a more detailed syllabus which more clearly reflects the connection to goals 1,2 & 3 1590 Introduction to Literature - sent back, needs clarification of to what extent it meets secondary goals, particularly goal 13 1505 Biology and the Modem World - sent back, no syllabus, too much technical jargon, p. 4 needs revision 4890 Advanced topics in Archeology: Cultural Resource Management - approved with reservations, sent forward No new proposals were available for consideration. The next committee meeting will be held Monday, Sept. 27 at 3 p.m. . He will be revising the syllabus for the course to bring it more in line with the objectives of the course. All are one section courses. A decision was made not to look these courses at the present time Bruce Waller addressed the issue of criteria for Critical Thinking intensive courses in general with specific consideration of Political Science 3712. Critical Thinking courses must do more than involve assignments that require critical thinking skills, but must also teach the mechanics of critical thinking.
