Below are a variety of items about upcoming events and other news notes on the campus of Youngstown State University:

Calendar
Thursday, Jan. 8.
Women’s and men’s basketball doubleheader at Beeghly Center. The women take on Milwaukee at 5:15 p.m., followed by the men against Illinois–Chicago at 7:35 p.m.

Saturday, Jan. 10. Women’s and men’s basketball doubleheader at Beeghly Center. The women play Green Bay at 4:35 p.m., followed by the men against Loyola at 7:05 p.m.

MLK Diversity Breakfast set for Jan. 22

  Rev. Dr. Otis Moss Jr.
The annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Breakfast will Thursday, Jan. 22 at YSU.

The keynote speaker is the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss Jr., one of the nation’s most influential religious leaders. A native of Georgia, Moss earned a bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College in 1956 and a master’s of divinity degree from the Morehouse School of Religion/Interdenominational Theological Center in 1959. He also completed special studies at the Inter–Denominational Theological Center from 1960 to 1961 and earned a Ph.D. in ministry from the United Theological Seminary in 1990.

Moss has been serving congregations since 1954. In 1971 he was the co–pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. In 1975, he was called to pastor Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland, where he retired on Dec. 31, 2008.

Winners of business plan competition announced

The Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University has announced the winning teams in the semi–annual Business 1500 Plan Competition:ᅠ
  • Omar Alhadi of Masury was recognized with the “Best Presentation” for the company he created called Catching the Present.

  • Tayana Powell of Youngstown received the award for the “Most Creative Presentation” for her business called Street Twisters.

 

 

  •   Joseph Murray
    Joseph Murray of Youngstown, Alexandria Airhardt of Warren, and Kristin Doyle of Licking received the award for “Most Likely to Succeed” for the business they formed called Miracle Maintenance.

    Exploring Business” is an introductory course in the business curriculum that prepares students both academically and in their chosen profession by introducing them to various functions of business, such as accounting, finance, human resources, management information systems, international business, marketing, and management. Students must also engage in a number of outside activities including workshops, college fairs

    and career exploration surveys.

The Business Plan is the climax of the course, requiring students to demonstrate entrepreneurial thinking and utilize all of the business knowledge gained throughout the semester. Their final project must be presented in both written and oral form. The competition is held at the end of every semester.

 

 

 

 

 

Faculty/staff awards, publications, presentations

Kin P. Moy, assistant professor, Electrical Engineering Technology, presented a paper titled “Integration of Electromagnetics and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) into Electrical Engineering Technology Program” at the American Society for Engineering Education National Conference in Pittsburgh. The paper was also published in the conference proceedings. 

Teresa A. Volsko, assistant professor, Health Professions, wrote a clinical perspectives feature article titledHome Based Management of the Pediatric and Adult Cystic Fibrosis Patient,” which was published in the AARC Times. The article described the advancements in research and clinical care over the past 25 years and their impact on longevity and quality of life for the chronic population. Additionally, Volsko was appointed by the president of the American Association for Respiratory Care as alternate representative to the American Heart Association’s Executive Committee on Basic Life Support.

Cameron Hughes, programmer/ analyst 4, Computer Services, co–authored a computer science book titled “Professional Multicore Programming: Design and Implementation for C++ Developers.” The book was published by Wiley.

Sylvia J. Imler, assistant professor, Counseling and Special Education, was awarded the Ohio Integrated Systems Model Follow–Up: Continuing the Work Grant for $13,000 in the Region 5 State Support Team. The grant is to provide a series of OISM capacity–building learning activities and supports to districts in Region 5 that have previously participated in OISM–based professional development.
