Auction raises funds for sudent trips to Mexico, Nigeria
An art auction that will help raise money for Youngstown State University nursing, criminal justice and social work students to study and serve in Mexico and Nigeria is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 20, in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center.

More than 100 pieces of art from artists such as Andrew Wyeth, Slava Brodinsky and Robert Lui will be auctioned. Preview starts at 6 p.m., with the auction commencing at 7 p.m.

Proceeds will help fund a one–week trip to Mexico that the YSU Department of Nursing is planning in April 2010 and a two–week trip to Nigeria that the Department of Nursing and the Department of Criminal Justice and Forensic Science are planning in January 2010. The trips are being planned in collaboration with the Ohio Medical Clinic Missionaries.

"It's a huge and expensive undertaking, but the benefits for our students are just tremendous," said Pamela McHugh Schuster, YSU professor of nursing. "As a team, it's exciting, rewarding and a great educational experience."

This will be the third trip to Mexico for YSU nursing students. Students, faculty and others on the trip set up a medical clinic to help villagers with an array of health issues. "They learn nursing care in the most primitive of conditions," she said.

The trip to Dikenafai, Nigeria, will include nursing, criminal justice and social work students. Nursing students will organize and operate a medical outpatient clinic. Criminal justice students, led by assistant professor Christian Onwudiwe, will compare the criminal justice systems in the United States with that of Nigeria. Dikenafai is Onwudiwe's hometown.

Schuster said she and Onwudiwe hope to establish relations with Imo State University in Nigeria to explore possible collaborations between the two institutions, such as faculty and student exchanges.

The trip to Nigeria itself costs about $2,500 per person, including transportation, housing, food and medical supplies, Schuster said.

Admission to the art auction is $15, or $5 for university students, and includes light refreshments and a cash bar. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact the YSU Department of Nursing at 330–941–3293. Checks made payable to Ohio Medical Clinic Missionaries may be sent to the YSU Department of Nursing, One University Plaza, Youngstown, OH 44555.

The auction is sponsored by the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services, the Center for International Studies and Programs, and Ohio Medical Clinic Missionaries.

The auction will be conducted by Marlin Fine Auctions and Creative Events, marlinart.com. Purchases made on the Web site will be credited to YSU by entering the code, 63750, at checkout.
