Bruce B. Lawrence, professor and chair of the Department of Religion at
Duke University, presents a free lecture entitled "Islam in the Public
Square: Minority Perspectives from Africa and Asia" in the Ohio Room of

Wednesday, Nov. 4, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. YSU's 12th Annual Research Recognition Luncheon will be in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center. Awards will be given to faculty members and academic departments for exceptional accomplishments in research. This year's awards ceremony comes on the heels of a record–breaking year for the university. Faculty and staff garnered $11.7 million in grants during fiscal year 2009, up more than 70 percent from 2008. Since 2000, the amount of grants awarded to YSU faculty and staff has nearly quadrupled. Andrew Wyeth, Slava Brodinsky and Robert Lui will be auctioned. Preview
starts at 6 p.m., with the auction commencing at 7 p.m. "It's a huge and expensive undertaking, but the benefits for our students are just tremendous," said Pamela McHugh Schuster, YSU professor of nursing. "As a team, it's exciting, rewarding and a great educational experience." This will be the third trip to Mexico for YSU nursing students. Students, faculty and others on the trip set up a medical clinic to help villagers with an array of health issues. "They learn nursing care in the most primitive of conditions," she said. The trip to Dikenafai, Nigeria, will include nursing, criminal justice and social work students. Nursing students will organize and operate a medical outpatient clinic. Criminal justice students, led by assistant professor Christian Onwudiwe, will compare the criminal justice systems in the United States with that of Nigeria. Dikenafai is Onwudiwe's hometown. Schuster said she and Onwudiwe hope to establish
relations with Imo State University in Nigeria to explore possible
collaborations between the two institutions, such as faculty and
student exchanges. The auction is sponsored by the Bitonte College of Health and Human Services, the Center for International Studies and Programs, and Ohio Medical Clinic Missionaries. The auction will be

Purchases made on the Web site will be credited to YSU by entering the
code, 63750, at checkout. WYSU–FM sets another record with fall fund drive In addition, a record 1,252 listeners contributed to the station during the drive, including 174 new members. "I''m very gratified that so many people have chosen to support this community service, especially considering the economic climate," said WYSU director Gary Sexton. "The community can continue to count on WYSU–FM for the highest quality news and information programming on radio, as well as excellent music programs." Ed Goist, WYSU development officer, added: "We are humbled, inspired and honored by the exceptional generosity of our listeners, volunteers and sponsors. They always come through for us." The week–long fund drive featured many giveaways and other incentives and challenges, including daily prize packages, a new member prize basket, and a Pennsylvania member prize package. All of the prize packages included new HD Radios. Listeners Tim McGarry and Nancy Marsh of Hubbard won the grand prize, a trip for two to Ireland. Corporate and foundation support

during pledge periods. Expert on Islam speaks Tuesday on campus The lecture is sponsored by the YSU Center for Islamic Studies.Lawrence is one of the foremost authorities on Islam. His numerous books and articles about Islam and Muslims provide insightful treatments of a wide range of issues. He will be presenting the results of his research conducted in Egypt, Ethiopia, the Philippines and Indonesia, and will offer observations on Muslim and Christian communities in these countries. A graduate of Princeton University with a Master of Divinity from Episcopal Divinity School (Cambridge), Lawrence earned his doctorate at Yale University in History of Religions. Pianist is New Music Society guest artist ![]() ![]() The performances will take place at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4 at the Music at Noon concert series in the Butler Institute of American Art; 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, Main Concert in Bliss Recital Hall; Thursday, Nov. 5 at 5 p.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Church on Covington Street in Youngstown; and Friday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Dana School of Music Convocation in Bliss Recital Hall. Antonov began his piano studies in Bulgaria at the age of 5. After moving to France, he studied at the Ecole Normale in Paris, and at the Conservatoire Nationale in Bordeaux. In 1999, he moved to the United States, attending the University of Missouri–Kansas. He completed the Bachelor of Music in piano at the University of Kansas and continued his studies at Texas Christian University. Antonov will be performing works by American Tin Pan Alley composer Dana Suesse (American Nocturne), former Dana Faculty member Till MacIvor Meyn (Suite Pastiche), recent guest composer Carter Pann (The Upstate Rags and Soiree Macabre), University of Miami faculty member Raina Murnak (an Ohio premiere of Le Mystere dÕattraction), Matthew Lewis (an American premiere of his Fantasy Suite) and the world premiere of Blue Fantasy by Dana Faculty member Robert Rollin. On the Thursday program at Sts. Peter and Paul, Covington, Antonov will also perform ChopinÕs Etude No. 12, op. 25, and HaydnÕs Sonata No. 11, Hob XVI/2. The concerts will also present a work by Richard Zacharias, a local composer and New Music Guild Inc. member The Composers Ensemble will perform two compositions by YSU freshman Samantha Hogan of Fredonia, N.Y. Meliae for trombone and euphonium, based on Greek mythological characters, will be played by senior Daniel Brandt, euphonium, and Hogan herself on trombone. Her quartet, Temporal Allusion for clarinet, euphonium, trombone and piano, also will be performed. Senior Ryan Coffey will perform the world premiere of his Wandering Lights, A Nocturne for Guitar and Electronic Tape All concerts are free and open to the public. For additional information, call 330–941–3636. 600 students attend Business 2020 this week Six hundred students from 20 high schools in the tri–county area will attend. Panel sessions will be offered on financial literacy, careers in business, and preparing for the job market. More than 25 area business leaders will offer insight and information during the sessions. Some of the participating businesses include: Humility of Mary Health Partners, Home Savings & Loan Company; AVI Food Systems; Cohen & Company; Seven Seventeen Credit Union, WFMJ/WBCB Television; Packer Thomas; Chase Bank; and the Coca–Cola Bottling Company of Eastern Great Lakes. Panel sessions will run concurrently from 10 a.m. to noon. Dick Hartzel, inventor/president of Jump Stretch Inc., will give the keynote address.
