Marketing Communications Campaigns Team at Youngstown State University
placed fourth in the District 5 American Advertising Federation’s
National Student Advertising Competition in Lexington, Ky.
AOL (America Online) challenged student advertising teams from across the nation to develop an integrated marketing campaign for their AIM Messaging and AIM Social Media products. The YSU class created the “What’s Your AIM?” campaign for AOL throughout the spring semester, complete with market research, creative design, promotional strategies, and media plans. The IMC Campaigns course is the capstone course in the Advertising/Public Relations program. Ying Wang, assistant professor of marketing, taught the course. The Williamson College of Business Administration is one of the few business schools in the country to house an advertising program. Wang credited part of the students’ success to their ability to develop a strong marketing strategy. YSU has participated in the American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition for more than 30 years. The presentation team consisted of Jessica Fraley of Lagrange, Kim Hanley of Oregon, Sarah Conklin of Wellington, Nicole Caravella of West Pittsburgh, Pa., Jordan Moore of Boardman, and Lou Liguore of Poland. Also making the trip to Lexington was Chris Bellino, Rob Bole, and Joe Foos. Bart Kittle, professor of marketing, assisted the class. Smoky Hollow Run/Walk set for Saturday, July 12 The 5K run will start at 9 a.m. and the family fun walk will start at 9:10 am. Both races start and finish at Harrison Field on Walnut Street in Smoky Hollow behind Bliss Hall on the YSU campus. The event is sponsored by St. Elizabeth Health Center, Wick Neighbors Inc., the Raymond J. Wean Foundation, Cassese’s MVR, WYSU–FM and YSU. An award ceremony and post–race party will begin after the race at Cassese’s MVR. All participants and volunteers will receive a free brunch, and can spend the rest of the day enjoying art, food and music featured at the Summer Festival of Arts on the YSU campus core. Children under 12 participating in the 5K run or 1 mile walk will receive a medal. Entry fee for the race is $12 by July 8. After
then, the registration fee is $15. The fee for children under 12 is $6.
The first 250 entrants to register will receive a free t–shirt. “The Summer Festival of the Arts has almost become a name brand, synonymous with a great summer–time activity designed for the entire family,” said Lori A. Factor, assistant director of the YSU Performing Arts Series. “We are encouraging our local artists to apply to the Artists’ Marketplace, the juried arts aspect of the Festival, because it makes good economic sense for them to sell their artwork at a show close to home. The application and booth fees are affordable so that an artist should be able to have a successful experience.” Last year’s show attracted over 60 artists featuring a variety of artwork. In addition to a vibrant fine arts area, bands and/or musicians are invited to apply for one of the eight available slots for performances at the Open Stage at the SFA. Interested applicants will perform one 45–minute set in exchange for inclusion in the overall Summer Festival of the Arts print and web performance schedule. Music must be suitable for an outdoor event where children and families will be close by, although the music need not be geared towards those audiences. These performance times are dedicated to groups just starting out, and performers will not be paid, however, they will be permitted to sell CD’s. Factor also noted that such a large event would be impossible without a strong corps of volunteers, which are needed for artist registration, information booths, in the children''s hands–on art tent, for technical assistance at performance sites and at the Festival of Nations international area, among others. Various shifts are available for the two–day event. Each volunteer receives a Festival tee shirt, cold water and reserved free parking. “The Mahoning Valley is a wonderfully hospitable place and our volunteers characterize those traits when they assist visitors and residents alike.” Applications for artists, Open Stage performers and volunteers are all located at the Summer Festival website, www.ysu.edu/sfa or by calling 330–941–2307. |
