MINUTES Academic Affairs Committee Youngstown State University April 15, 1971 Date: Wednesday, April 14, 1971 at 3:00 P.M. in Room 216 ASO. Present: R. Hare, T. Miner, F. Smith, V. Richley, Dean Scriven, F. Rosenberg, L. Simko, M. Siman, P. Galterio Absent: F. Fortunato, E. Eminhizer, E. Niemi, G. Overby, T. Brachfeld 1. T. Miner called the meeting to order at 3:05 P.M. and received approval of the minutes of the last meeting (April 7, 1971). 2. T. Miner presented her statement on a "Statute Of Limitations". After a great deal of deliberation and slight revision, the statement was approved by general committee acclaim. The Academic Affairs Committee proposes the following policy: A student may petition the Dean of his school to exclude from the calculation of his grade point average grades earned five or more calendar years before. If the petition is approved all grades (not merely Ds and Fa) earned during the specified quarter or semester and all previous grades (not merely Ds and Fs) will then be removed from the calculation. However, all grades remain on the permanent record. Excladed Course credit (transfer credit as well) will not count towards the total required hours for graduation. However, courses passed may fulfill basic curriculum requirements and may satisfy as prerequisites for higher courses where applicable. Only one petition may be approved. 3. Additional discussion on the "Statute" centered about the repetition of courses excluded by the "Statute". L. Simko moved, M. Siman seconded and the committee approved the following addition to the statement of item 2 above. Courses excluded from the calculations may be taken again and may be repeated once. 4. Dean Scriven (the committee unanimously concurring) commended Dr. Thelma Miner for her efforts in developing the statement herein. Academic Affairs Committee -Page 2- s. Grades may not be removed from the permanent record card. 2. Grades earned five or more years prior to application for the statute of limitations cons ideration may be included under the statute of limitations ruling. 3. If a student petitions for removal of grades under the statute of limitations, all grades earned during the specified quarter or semester and all previous grades earned must be removed from calculations. 4. Although approval of the statute of limitations request eliminates courses and grades from calculations for graduation, courses which were passed mayor may not be, at the discretion of the department head, considered as meeting the necessary prerequisites .
