MINUTES FROM ACADEMIC AFFAIRS COMMITTEE MEETING December 3, 1980 3:00 p.m. Present: Dr. Baldino Prof. Kimbrough Dr. Gill is Dr. Lateef Dr. Hahn Dr. Munro Dr. Khawaja Prof. Simmons Guests: Members of the Ad Hoc Committee on General Educational Requirements Mr. Hugh Earnhart (History) Dr. Ronald Gould (Music) Previous Minutes: Regarding the minutes of November 19, 1980~ the following changes were made: On page 2, under Labor Relations, the sentence beginning with "A well-found program ll was changed to "A well-founded program". In' the following sentence, themselves was changed to itself. In the fo;Jilowing sentence the word Iinot" was changed to "nor". The first sentence under Committee Guidel ines was modified to read:"Becausethere has been a lack of communication between departments, . II Prof. Kimbrough moved, seconded by Dr. Munro to approve' the amended m i nu tes of November 19,1980. The vote to approve the a me nded minutes was unanimous. Approval of the minutes from November 26, 1980 were postponed unt i 1 the next meet i ng. Ad Hoc Comm i tt ee on General Educationsl Requirements:The purpose of this subcommittee is to review the general education requirements and submit its report to the Academic Affairs Committee. The committee is at a standstill as to whether they should develop a proposal encompassing all requirements or review and modify just segments of the genera 1 requ i rements. Dr. Gould brought up the following questions and topics: (1) Should the Ad Hoc Committee limit their investigations at the onset to the areas of Mathematics and Commun ica t ions 1 (2) In the Math area a basic level of competency is suggested by the subcommittee. To that end a test is suggested. This test is simple algebra and arithmetic. (3) Some Subcommittee problems: A} It is easy to talk about the philosophical position on a subject but the mechanics a ,re hard to establ ish (the mechanics must be accompl ished otherwise we cannot achieve our objective). correc ted Acad mic Affairs Meeting Minutes - page 2 B) Some departments are not will ing to accept additional work. Although the departments all feel a need for the changes, they would I ike someone else to enfolrce these changes. It was stated that the Ad Hoc Committee should not design its proposals to provide remedial work to the stude~ The subcommittee felt that remedial work and general requirements could not be seperated. It was also stated that students are permitted to postpone the taking of a specific course that should be taken during the students first 2 or 3 quarters. In order for a student to register for a particular subject he should pass a test which is given to the student while he/she is still in high school. (This test is along the same I ine as the test for Basic Composition 550). Finally this question was raised, "Should the subcommittee set minimum standards on general requirements?" If they did set standards, each school could add on to this minimum, if they felt the student is required to have more knowledge in a specific subject area. It was suggested that the subcommittee should continue to work on a proposal deal ing with all general education requirements. The subcommittee need not concern itself with the degree of difficulty any particular proposal may have in securing Senate approval, that ought to concern the Academic Affairs Committee.
