During the 1990s, President Cochran increased the University's ties to the surrounding community through cooperative planning and outreach services.
President Sweet has continued that effort, stating in 2005 that “there's an increasing recognition that [for] urban institutions, we have to be not only located in the city, but we have to be part of the city.”
Significant new developments under President Sweet include:
* The formation of Wick Neighbors, Inc. to unite and strengthen the institutions along Wick Avenue.
* The privately funded construction of the Courtyard Apartments which provides convenient off-campus housing for students.
* The Early College partnership with Youngstown City Schools which targets at risk high school students and prepares them for college classes.
* Increasing the amount of local research done by YSU students through internships at businesses and non-profits. |
