The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools inspects schools on a 10-year cycle. The process includes an Institutional Self Study and an on-site visit. In the Self Study, the school must evaluate itself on criteria set by the HLC and report on concerns from previous accreditations. These reports also contain strategic plans, budget, and enrollment information. Youngstown State University has held accreditation from the HLC since 1945.
