dc.description.abstract This thesis was performed in accordance with a research project undertaken by Jack D. Bakos, Jr., Ph.d. of the Civil Engineering department of Youngstown State University. The project was sponsored by the Ohio Department of Transportation in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration and the Bureau of Public Roads. The objective of the study was to determine the feasibility of using low-density concrete for the construction of crash attenuators to absorb the energy imparted by vehicle collision at a high rate of speed. The attenuators are intended for use in areas where high probability of passenger fatality exists resulting from a vehicle running off the roadway. The most suitable locations are near bridge abutments and exit ramp gore areas. The following text deals with the protection of the attenuators from environmental effects with economical installation techniques. en_US
